Stress Management at School/College

Going to college can be an amazing experience for any young adult. There are the great on-campus parties, the new friends, sports, and concerts. With all of these activities, it can be very difficult to stay focused on what you're actually at college for—to study and get a degree. One of the leading reasons why students drop out of college is because of being overwhelmed by school. Every student can benefit from learning about stress management.

I Am So Stressed!

With all the pressure of being a student at a college, it's easy for any student to get stressed out. This is especially the case during finals, when students often cram study in order to prepare themselves to take that final exam. It really doesn't have to be this way—you don't have to be so stressed out if you use some of the below study tips/advice at school.

Stress Management 101: Tips

The best way of managing stress is to actually prevent it. That is, you should take all the steps necessary to keep yourself from getting stressed out in the first place.

Tip #1: Use a School Planner

School planners are incredibly useful for any student. They allow a student to get and stay organized. Organization is a big part of any student's success, so it's important you apply this tip to your studies. When you use a school planner, you are able to write down everything about school and keep it in one place. Then you can go back to the school planner when you are worrying about when an assignment is done. Using your school diary effectively is crucial, so make sure you take the time to do this.

Tip #2: Write Down Your Assignments and Deadlines

The biggest mistake students make is to not write down their assignments and deadlines. As a result, they often put off writing a paper or studying until the very last minute. That's why you should write down your assignments and their deadlines as soon as you are told by your professor. Not the next day, but the minute you are told. Doing so allows you to keep track of when things are due.

Tip #3: No Procrastination

Never, ever put off doing something until the very last minute. If you do put it off, you will become very stressed out and will enter into “panic” mode. Once you get an assignment, you should make plans to start on it as soon as possible and then just do it.

Tip #4: Adequate Nutrition and Sleep

Tip number 4 on our list of study tips/advice at school is to get enough nutrition and sleep. It can be tempting to stay out late or eat pizza for breakfast, but both will negatively affect how your brain functions. You should eat 3-5 balanced meals per day and get at least 8 hours of sleep. In doing so you'll be refreshed and better able to focus on school.

Tip #5: Relax

Instead of getting stressed out, take a deep breath and relax. Clear your mind of all the stress. Then go ahead and do whatever work is necessary to do your best on the assignment.

Summary: It can be very stressful to go to college. However, it doesn't have to be this way, especially if you learn how to manage the stress in your life by following these tips.
